He was maltreated in an Egyptian prison for four years, under the charge of insulting Islam. He knows better: Egypt is not the country from a tourist postcard – Anna Szulc writes in the latest issue of Newsweek. The text talks about Kareem Amer, currently in Krakow on a scholarship offered by the Villa Decius Association as part of the cooperation between the city of Krakow and the ICORN International Cities of Refuge Network. Kareem is the first Egyptian blogger to go to prison for his blog entries. He was sentenced to a total of four years in prison for insulting Islam and disseminating false information about President Mubarak.
