2 January 2013 A meeting with Adam Zagajewski

The rector of the Jagiellonian University Wojciech Nowak invites you to take part in a meeting with Adam Zagajewski. On the 16th of January 2013, at 6 p.m., in the lecture theatre of the Collegium Novum of Jagiellonian University (ul. Gołębia 24), the poet will have a conversation with Professor Anna Czabanowska-Wróbel, Magdalena Heydel and Łukasz Tischner. Entrance is free.

As you may remember, Adam Zagajewski received the title of doctor honoris causa of Jagiellonian University on the 14th of December 2012. A resolution in this respect was adopted in June by the University Senate. The substantiation of the resolution specifies that the title of doctor honoris causa was conferred upon Adam Zagajewski in particular for his achievements in poetry, which “expresses unique human experiences and what is universal” and for “consistently aiming at retaining equilibrium between the freedom of a lone individual, and social freedom and collective solidarity in his works ”.

The “view, ingrained in his poetic and essayistic works, that experiencing beauty, searching for truth and wishing for good are not a forgotten European utopia, but the right of every human being”, was also recognised. Other arguments included “representing Polish literature in the world, emphasising the links between Polish and foreign poetry” and “the message of his works that culture and humanistic values are the core of democracy, while remembering about the past is necessary in understanding the present”.
The resolution of the Jagiellonian University Senate was preceded by a resolution of the University’s Faculty of Polish Studies’ Board and reviews by Professor Anna Legeżyńska of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Professor Jacek Łukaszewicz of the University of Wrocław, backed up with resolutions of the senates of these universities.
