8 March 2013 41 Books Compete for the 2013 Angelus Central European Literature Award
Forty one books will compete in the 8th edition of the competition for the Angelus Central European Literature Award. The jury, chaired by Russian poet Natalya Gorbanevskaya, announced the list of titles that meet the competition regulations’ requirements yesterday (the 7th of March). The list includes books by authors who were guests of the Conrad Festival: Andrzej Stasiuk’s Grochów, Krzysztof Varga’s Trociny, Oksana Zabuzhko’s The Museum of Abandoned Secrets, and Jerzy Pilch’s Dziennik. We will find out who the winner is on the 19th of October.
The books competing for the award are submitted by the publishers. Members of the jury can also present their suggestions. This time, they exercised this right and submitted five books.
“Polish literature definitely prevails,” says Natalya Gorbanevskaya. “I am under the impression that Polish publishers do not notice literature published in Central Europe. There are fewer and fewer titles from this area in Polish bookshops.”
The chair of the Angelus jury also complained about the publishers – that they do not read the award’s regulations, and submit scientific, linguistic and essayistic books which do not have much in common with prose.
The Angelus Central European Literature Award is awarded every year for the best prose book published in Polish the previous year. The winner can be an author coming from one of 21 Central European countries: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Macedonia, Moldova, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Hungary. The prize is a cheque for PLN 150,000 and a statuette created by Wrocław sculptress, Ewa Rossano. Since the fourth edition, the award has been accompanied by a distinction for the translator of the awarded book, funded by the Angelus Silesius State Higher Vocational School (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa im. Angelusa Silesiusa) from Wałbrzych. If the Angelus is awarded to a Polish writer, the jury selects the best translator of one of the foreign books.
Authors previously awarded with the Angelus include: Miljenko Jergović, Svetlana Alexievich, György Spiró, Josef Škvorecký, Péter Esterházy, Martin Pollack, Yuri Andrukhovych .
