11 March 2011 The last day of school for Reading Lessons?

‘Despite the great popularity enjoyed by Reading Lessons, their future is very uncertain,’ claims the Tygodnik Powszechny. This year the project has not obtained co-financing as part of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage programme as an Artistic event – Literature. Although the goal of the programme is creation of conditions for literary development, including organisation of literary events promoting literature and readership, the Reading Lessons were not recognised as such – despite the enthusiasm of readers and lecturers participating in it. Reading Lessons with… is an idea consisting in joint reading of literature with youth. The premiere lesson was held during the 1st International Joseph Conrad Literature Festival organised by the Tygodnik Powszechny Foundation and the City of Krakow from the 2nd – 7th of November 2009. During last year’s edition of the Festival, lessons with Piotr Paziński and Ewa Kuryluk drew crowds, and thanks to their success the Reading Lessons were organised all over the country. Lecturers have included: Stefan Chwin, Marek Bieńczyk, Piotr Śliwiński, Michał Paweł Markowski, Grzegorz Jankowicz, Andrzej Skrendo, Przemysław Czapliński, Inga Iwasiów, Stanisław Bereś, Paweł Próchniak, Dariusz Nowacki, Michał Olszewski, Hieronim Chojnacki, Piotr Michałowski, Wojciech Bonowicz, Antoni Smuszkiewicz, Jan Ciechowicz.
