10 August 2011 Chicken with Plums by Marjane Satrapi on the big screen

Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, authors of the famed Persepolis, are working on another film. Poulet aux prunes, will be an adaptation of Satrapi’s comic book Chicken with Plums. The cast will include Isabella Rossellini, Mathieu Amalric and Chiara Mastroianni. The world premiere will be held on October 26th, 2011.

Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi are working together again, this time presenting the last days in the life of the talented musician Nassar Ali Khan. Their first film together – Persepolis – was an epic tale of Iran and the Islamic revolution; Chicken with Plums, hailed as the best comic book of 2004 at the prestigious Angouleme Festival, is an intimate story of a family drama. The story unfolds over eight days. A family spat triggers a sudden bout of depression in the main character. Despite trying desperately to remember all the things worth living for (including the title’s chicken with plums, his favourite dish), he cannot regain the will to live, and dies after a week – an event the author announces at the very beginning of the piece.

Let us not forget that Marjane Satrapi – an Iranian-French author of comic books, graphic novels, children’s books, as well as director of animated films – was a guest of the second edition of the Conrad Festival. In Poland, besides Chicken with Plums and Persepolis, the comic book Embroideries has also been published. Satrapi lives in Paris and works for The New York Times and The New Yorker as a contributing illustrator.
