Co-author (with Louis Althusser) of Reading Capital, a groundbreaking reinterpretation of Karl Marx. He devotes plenty of attention to the questions of human rights, civic activity, and the place of the poor in politics and philosophy. One of the most frequently quoted French intellectuals, recognised the philosopher of greatest impact on contemporary art by Artforum magazine in 2006.
