Leszek Engelking

Polish poet, novelist, translator, specialist in literature, literary critic. Studied Polish studies (specialisation: film theory) at the University of Warsaw. In 1984–1995 worked as an editor in the Literatura na Świecie monthly. In 1997–1998, he taught history of Czech literature and history of Czech and Slovak film at the University of Warsaw. Member of the Polish PEN Club, Societé Européenne de Culture and the Scriptus Literary Society. Engelking translates from English, Czech, Spanish, Russian, Slovak and Ukrainian. He is the Polish collaborator of the Paideuma, an American magazine about the life and works of Ezra pound (Engelking received the Literatura na Świecie translation prize for his book translation debut, a translation of Pound's Selected Poems, and a prize from the Polish Translators' and Interpreters' Society for the best essay translation of The Spirit of Romance by the same author). Engelking is a member of the international editorial board of Slavia, a Czech magazine about Slavonic studies. He is also the author of several volumes of poetry: Autobus do hotelu Cytera (1979), Haiku własne i cudze (1991), Mistrzyni kaligrafii i inne wiersze (1994) and Dom piąty (1997), as well as a volume of prose entitled Szczęście i inne prozy (2007). His texts have been translated into Czech, English, Belarussian, Spanish, Lithuanian, German, Russian and Serbian.Picture: Mariusz Kubik
