A Literary Form of Life | Giraud | Nothomb

A Literary Form of Life | Giraud | Nothomb

A teenaged protagonist in one of Amélie Nothomb’s novels decides to translate Iliad anew. He believes that this is the only way for him to fully understand Homer’s work. He is very enthusiastic about the project. At some point he realizes that it is not only his mind but also his body that takes part in the translation process. On coming across a difficult passage, he begins to “chant” rhythmically with his legs. However, this does not bring the desired result. So, he begins to walk around, feeling Homer’s text circulating throughout his body as he does so, switching from one language to another in an organic way. With time, the details of this event become blurred. However, his memory of the tremendous psychophysical force that had overwhelmed him is still very much alive. Is such a communion with the read text safe? Can we afford to make our lives fully literary?
