About establishing the past | Sabaliauskaitė | Szczerek

About establishing the past | Sabaliauskaitė | Szczerek

In her acclaimed tetralogy Silva rerum, the Lithuanian author of Polish origin Kristina Sabaliauskaitė spins a multigenerational tale of 17th- and 18th-century Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, setting it in a broader context of European history. The exploits of the noble Narwoysz family reflect the dreams and fears felt by the people at the time. The saga has taken Lithuania by storm, turning readers’ interest to the country’s multicultural past; the first volume has also been very well received in Poland. So what will we find in the Polish translation of the second volume? How does literature shape and change historical memory? Do we live in the days of a longing for the past, and – if so – how can we use it as a foundation to build a better future?
