conrad in bookshops | Taboo. Women’s History

Over the last century, women have fought for their rights, smashed glass ceilings and broke social taboos. This year marks the centenary of Polish women receiving the vote, serving as a starting point of a discussion on the sheer scale of the restrictions placed on women’s experiences in the public and private spheres. We need to talk about topics generally avoided in historiography; themes which have always existed on the boundaries of official research and records. The ideas have been covered in ambitious women’s literature, of which transgression has always been a deeply ingrained part. If they have appeared in public discourse, it is through authors such as Zofia Nałkowska who issued a demand for women to participate fully in public life during the Women’s Congress in Warsaw in 1907, to the shock of all participants including the attending feminists. The event accompanies the official celebrations of the Centenary of Women’s Votes, organised by the Centenary of the Women’s Movement Association.
