Exhibition opening: Unrecounted. Jan Peter Tripp

Unrecounted – W.G. Sebald, Jan Peter Tripp

An exhibition of poems by W.G. Sebald and engravings by Jan Peter Tripp – as well as meetings dedicated to the joint project of the artists and Sebald’s work.

Since his school days, W.G. Sebald had been friends with Jan Peter Tripp, the known German hyperrealist painter, about whose paintings he wrote two essays. The artists had long planned a joint project, which was interrupted by Sebald’s sudden death. The tome Unerzählt/Unrecounted, composed of 33 poems by Sebald and 33 engravings by Tripp, was published after the writer’s death. The poems are not the only illustration of the poems, since the project was conceived as a dialogue between word and image from the start. The engravings present the eyes of painters, poets, writers and friends. They refer to the running theme of Sebald’s work, resembling the photographs of eyes that the writer put in his novels Vertigo and Austerlitz.

The exhibition at the Pałac Pod Baranami Gallery (entrance from ulica Św. Anny), open 21.10-25.10 from 12 noon to 8 pm, 26.10-6.11, Mon-Fri, 2 pm to 6 pm.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition, with the participation of Jan Peter Tripp on Tuesday, 20.10.2015, at 6 pm at the Pałac Pod Baranami Gallery (entrance from ulica Św. Anny).

The exhibition will be complemented by a discussion with Jan Peter Tripp – the long-time friend of the writer and author of the engravings, Małgorzata Łukasiewicz – translator and scholar of Sebald’s work, and Prof. Maria Poprzęcka, Ph.D. – art historian. The meeting will be conducted by Magda Heydel, and will take place on Tuesday, 20.10.2015, at 6:30 pm, at the Goethe-Institut in Krakow, 20 Market Square.
