War!

The exhibition War! at the club-gallery Pasaż (Pasaż Bielaka) is the presentation of the exceptional comics pages by Polish illustrators Krzysztof Gawronkiewicz and Mariusz Sołtysik, who, along with their excellent scriptwriters, took on the drama of World War II in the still-fresh, pop-culture form of the graphic novel.

Most of the works are from three albums illustrated by Gawronkiewicz. These are Achtung Zelig!, the already legendary volume created with Krystian Rosenberg, Burza. Ucieczka z Warszawy ’40 (The Storm. Escape from Warsaw ‘40) by Maciej Parowski, and Powstanie. Za dzień, za dwa (Uprising) by screenwriter Marzena Sowa, published last year.

Each one takes on the subject of the war, but portrays it in a different way and from a different perspective – we have the story of an old Jewish man, who survives the Holocaust by escaping a German transport; there is a fantastic, alternative history of Poland after World War II; and finally, there is the unusual story by Marzena Sowa about occupied Warsaw just before the uprising, seen through the lens of the microcosm of one of the local residential buildings.

The second part of the exhibition are panels from the graphic novel Naród Zatracenia (Nation of Perdition) illustrated by Sołtysik and written by Maciej Świerkocki, set in the ghetto of Łódź. The story is narrated by an orphaned Jewish boy, Dawid, who will say, “War! How exciting was this word, which I’d only known from the Old Testament and textbooks”. The shocking story of the realities of war, uncovering its senselessness and cruelty, is enclosed in Sołtysik’s monochromatic drawings, accented in places with red.

Over 25 works will be enlarged to poster size, which will make the wartime images even more eloquent and readable despite being taken out of the context of their volumes. The exhibition, with the opening planned for 6pm on the 20th of October, will be accompanied by a discussion with the participation of the duos of Maciej Świerkocki and Mariusz Sołtysik as well as Krzysztof Gawronkiewicz and Marzena Sowa. The exhibition is hosted by Pasaż Gallery and the City of Literature Foundation.
