Contrary to popular opinion, wars never look the same. The trauma they cause always remains an extremely individual experience that cannot be described. Which doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try – the best proof of this is the work of Vasyl Słapczuk, a badly wounded veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan in the 1980s . One of the most important Ukrainian writers and poets has spent decades looking for a way to tell his story.
