It is difficult to find a greater enthusiast – and at the same time critic – of Polish Romanticism than the Hungarian writer and translator György Spiró. Fascinated with Polish culture, he has visited Warsaw many times, where he studied our history and literature in detail. A result of this passion is his monumental novel Mesjasze (Messiahs), in which he tells the story of the members of the Divine Matter Circle, which includes of course Mickiewicz. What does Polish Messianism look like from the outsider’s perspective? What does it mean to us today?
