On Being Yourself | Bice | Matsuda
On Being Yourself | Bice | Matsuda
Meeting with Aoko Matsuda
Host: Agata Bice
In her debut collection of short stories, Stackable, Matsuda humorously paints a critical picture of contemporary society in which individuals become victims of a toxic mix of moral and institutional pressures. The pages of her works are filled with characters who try at all costs to fit into the roles imposed on them. The outcome of this approach is a seemingly homogeneous world, yet full of inequality, sexism and intolerance. In his latest novel, Jizoku kanōna tamashii no riyō (“The Sustainable Use of Our Souls”) Matsuda creates a futuristic world where restrictive social mechanisms cease to function overnight. Her protagonists can suddenly just be themselves. Is such a world possible? And if so, what would have to change for us to create it? What might the “sustainable development of the individual” look like if emphasis were placed on individual needs, in particular the needs of women living in a society constructed and governed by men?
