Main characters in Taraghi’s novels and short stories are usually people suspended between tradition, which precludes individuality while still providing a foundation for existence, and modernity, which is chaotic but gives freedom. Hosseini, on the other hand, is interested in people who are lonely out of necessity or by choice, isolated from the world and community, living in the rhythm of their weaknesses, obsessions, suffering, and – however paradoxical it sounds – death.
