The book market is undergoing a profound transformation that has largely taken publishers by surprise. The pandemic may not have caused a significant drop in book sales, contrary to initial fears, but it has caused huge problems with the availability of paper. The war in Ukraine and the current economic situation are making readers less likely to buy books. Our perception of the world is also changing, with new topics such as climate change gaining in importance. All these factors may offer publishers an opportunity to win new readers, provided that they can anticipate the challenges ahead and adapt to them.
