War never leaves behind simple stories – rather, broken sentences and gaps in memory. Literature comes to the rescue, for it can preserve what is singular and fragile. Collective memory too often hardens into a slogan or a political catchphrase. Meanwhile, individual testimonies – recorded in novels, essays, or reportage – retain truth that cannot be denied. How, then, can we speak of war without repeating clichés? And do individual stories stand a chance against the official language of the victors?
