City of dreams or city of disappointments? A literary walk through Nowa Huta in search of radical hope
Nowa Huta was one of the most audacious urban planning concepts of the 20th century - a project of socialist utopia in which workers were to be given not only jobs but also a new life. The walk follows in the footsteps of the newcomers, their hopes and promises, which over time clashed with reality. Here one can see what the radical hope described by Jonathan Lear is and how it persists despite the collapse of great visions and structures.
Literature about Nowa Huta has for years exposed the tension between utopia and everyday reality. In Poemat dla dorosłych, Adam Ważyk described the birth of enthusiasm and bitter disappointment. In Bestiariusz nowohucki, Elżbieta Łapczyńska portrayed Nowa Huta as a space of strangeness and transformation, where story becomes a means of survival in a world of chaos. Whereas Katarzyna Kobylarczyk in Kobiety Nowej Huty. Cegły, perły i petardy gave voice to the female residents who, with their own strength and solidarity, formed the fabric of the community - the author showed that hope also has a female face.
