A multifaceted story about the activities of an organisation that for a century upheld freedom of expression, humanist values, literary culture and dialogue between nations. It consists of carefully designed boards presenting not only the history of the Polish PEN Club, but also profiles of its presidents, international guests, eminent writers and key moments in the literary life of Poland and the world. The exhibition opens with the International Charter of P.E.N - a document created when the organisation was born, which remains one of the most important ethical manifestos for contemporary writers. Subsequent parts of the exhibition show the birth and development of the Polish PEN Club from its foundation at the turn of 1924 and 1925 to the profiles of a group of Polish writers, poets and journalists, including Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, Jan Lechoń, Jan Lorentowicz, Bronisława Neufeldówna, Leopold Staff and the first president, Stefan Żeromski. Superb photographic material and newspaper excerpts illustrate the dynamic activity between the wars, the difficult time of war and the Polish People's Republic, and the rebirth in 1989.
