Literature, or the eighteenth camel. Discussion with Agata Bielik-Robson, Grzegorz Jankowicz and Piotr Paziński.

A Bedouin bequeathed 17 camels to his three sons. The eldest was to receive half the herd, the middle 1/3rd, and the youngest 1/9th. They argued for a long time how to fulfil their father’s last with without killing any animals in the process. They only managed when the sage Nasreddin lent them an additional animal. The eighteenth camel is an unexpected salvation coming from the outside: thanks to it, bloodshed is avoided and a new world order can be introduced, in which everyone benefits. This may be the most apt (and certainly the most original) definition of literature we have managed to create in the history of the Conrad Festival.
