Abdulrazak Gurnah’s prose reveals life suspended between Africa and Europe, memory and the present, language of oppression and attempts to tell one’s own story. Returns in his novels are never simple. Home becomes foreign, and former worlds irretrievable. The Nobel laureate shows that the experience of migration, colonialism, and exile does not end with a change of place – it remains in the body and memory, shaping subsequent generations. Literature becomes the only space where lost voices can be preserved and restored to significance.
