The world has accustomed us to think of hope as something grand and exalted – a promise of an epoch-making change. Yet the Icelandic writer Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir shows that it can be quite the opposite: hope may arise from small, almost imperceptible gestures. From acts as ordinary as fixing a leaky faucet or tending a garden. These are stories that remind us that even in the most hopeless of moments, one can find a language that makes it possible to begin again. But is it really that simple?
