Norman Erikson Pasaribu, writing in a country as linguistically and ethnically diverse as Indonesia, documents the experience of the “multiply separate” individual – a queer person from the Christian Batak community. At the same time, in their quiet, understated prose, they capture and give name to feelings familiar to almost everyone: doubt, disbelief, or the shadow of sadness that lingers beneath the skin, accompanying existence itself – like a simple note brought by a messenger from afar. Literature provides a symbolic refuge, a way to bear the weight of melancholy and alienation, which, however, never fully disappear. What is like to live in a home built of words?
