In The Meursault Investigation, Kamel Daoud gives voice to the man Albert Camus left nameless in The Stranger. In Huryska, the protagonist is a woman mutilated during the Algerian civil war – she cannot speak because her tongue has been cut out. Daoud shows how literature can restore voice to those whom history has condemned to silence. But it is a task that demands attentiveness – every voice we give to someone can just as easily be taken away.
