Sergei Parajanov is considered to be one of the most fascinating filmmakers in the history of cinema, and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is one of his most outstanding achievements. This Ukrainian film, banned for years in the USSR, attempted to enter the spiritual world of the Hutsuls, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Carpathians. Parajanov penetrated deep into their archaic culture, into a complex world of symbols, rituals and myths, taking inspiration from Ukrainian visual and musical forms. The film is a screen adaptation of Mykhailo Kociubynsky’s novel of the same title.
