What happens to a person when they leave one language behind and try to make a home in another? Emigration in Yan Ge’s work is neither a dream come true nor a simple escape. It is a daily life full of contradictions – where feelings of alienation mingle with fascination, and new words take root only with difficulty. Her literature tells of life in suspension – how identity is shaped at the intersection of cultures, in places that are never fully one’s own.
