When People Hear the Word “Avant-garde,” They Go Home | Małgorzata Halber, Rafał Księżyk, Dariusz Misiuna

Learning from dreams, turning familiar meanings upside down, embracing chaos, transforming art into life and life into art – these were just some of the twentieth-century avant-garde’s manifestos. The avant-gardists showed that tremors from the world of art could trigger cultural earthquakes. They suggested how, in a hostile environment, one might become a guerrilla of everyday life – but they themselves were not immune to the toxic spells of political ideology, or to the comforts of the gilded cage of institutions. Should we read their visions as prophecy, or learn from their mistakes? We will ask what lessons today can be drawn from these former cultural insurgents.
