Aoko Matsuda
(born in 1979) — Japanese writer, essayist and translator, whose prose is characterised by a light and ironic tone, which she uses to expose the absurdities of the surrounding world. Her debut collection of short stories, Stackable , was nominated for the Yukio Mishima Award and the Noma Literary Prize for best debut. She has translated the prose by Karen Russell and Carmen Maria Machado into Japanese. Her texts were translated into English and published in Granta and the Monkey Business magazines. In 2020, the publication of the English translation of her short stories Where the Wild Ladies Are brought her a World Fantasy Award nomination. The collection was also listed among the 10 best fiction books of the Time magazine. In 2020, she released her latest novel – Jizoku kanōna tamashii no riyō (“The Sustainable Use of Our Souls”).
