Paule Constant

Writer and critic. She has spent much of her life in Africa, Asia and South America. After her doctorate at the Sorbonne, she taught French literature at the University of Aix-Marseille. Many of her books are set in Africa and focus on the themes of colonialism, women’s education and their status. She has won numerous literary awards, including Prix Goncourt (1998), Grand Prix du roman Académie française (1990), and Prix de l'essai Académie française (1987). She was one of the jurors of the Femina Award. She lives in Aix-en-Provence, where she founded the Centre des Écrivains du Sud - Jean Giono in 2000.

Member of the Goncourt Academy since January 2013.
