Born in Seoul in 1976. She graduated from Yonsei University in her home city and later earned a master's degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies from Yale University in the United States. She earned her doctorate in Slavic languages and literatures at Indiana Bloomington University in the United States. She translated numerous Russian and Polish novels into Korean. She enjoys dark and magical stories and tales of strong women who struggle to survive in an unjust and violent worlds. Her short story collection Cursed Bunny was shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize. She currently lives with her husband in Pohang, South Korea.
