Hałyna Kruk

Poet, literary translator and scholar. She was born and lives in Lviv, where she teaches Ukrainian and world literature at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.   Author of books of poetry: Mandry u Poshukakh Domu ("Journeys in Search of Home")  (1997), Slidy na Pisku ("Footprints on Sand") (1997), Oblychchia poza svitlynoju ("The Face beyond the Photograph") (2005), Spiv/isnuvannya  (2013) and Dorosła (2017), as well as the short story collection Chto zawhodno, tilky ne ja which won the 2021 Best Book Award for Contemporary Ukrainian Literature awarded by the Lviv Publishers’ Forum and the Kovalivych Family Fund. Translator of poems by Wis…awa Szymborska, Bohdan Zadura and Kazimierz Wierzyński, as well as prose by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Weronika Gogola, Paweł Sołtys and Stanisław Lem, as well as other authors. Her poems have been published in Polish literary magazines and in anthologies: Pociąg do poezji (2011; translated by Bohdan Zadura), Węzły, sukienki, żagle. Nowa poezja, ojczyzna i dziewczyna (2013; translated by Artur Fryz), Portret kobiecy w odwróconej perspektywie. 12 poetek z Czech, Słowenii i Ukrainy (2013; translated by Aneta Kamińska), Wschód – Zachód. Wiersze z Ukrainy i dla Ukrainy (2014; translated by Aneta Kamińska), Komiks wierszem po ukraińsku (2015; translated by Aneta Kamińska). In 2018, a selection of her poems Wakacje nad Letą, translated by Bohdan Zadura, was released in Poland, followed up in 2022 with a a bilingual book of poetry titled Żywica, translated by Aneta Kaminska, as well as a collection of short stories Ktokolwiek, tylko nie ja (translated by Bohdan Zadura). Fellow of the Gaude Polonia programme of the Polish Ministry of Culture (Warsaw 2003, 2010) and Homines Urbani at Villa Decius (Krakow, 2005).
