James X - Gerard Mannix Flynn performance

James X - Gerard Mannix Flynn performance

Written by Gerard Mannix Flynn
Directed by Gabriel Byrne
After the performance discussion with the Artist.
The Irish government inquiry commission charged with investigating cases of inhumane treatment of detainees in juvenile halls is in session. James X, one of the maltreated children, is waiting in the foyer. He is getting ready to give a testimony which, he hopes, will liberate him from his past. As he awaits his turn, James realises that the commission before which he is about to stand is part of the very same system that turned children like him into prisoners. This flash of understanding pushes him to tell the story that finally liberates him.
In the last decade, the Catholic church and state institutions, not just in Ireland but all over the world, became the focus of a revelation. The secrets which came to light at that time concerned cases of sexual abuse and the mistreatment of thousands of defenceless children.
James X tells the story of one such child, a story which struggles to see the light of day, in which the human spirit can finally triumph in all its glory.
James X is a play for one actor.
The performance lasts 75 minutes; there is no intermission.
