Gonçalo M. Tavares is sometimes called the “Portuguese Kafka”… but what does that mean? Is it that he explores the dark and paradoxical areas of existence in his prose? Or is he the linguistic heir of the greatest European modernists, with the author of The Castle at the forefront? Or perhaps it is all about practicing literature as a strictly defined form of life? The answer to these questions must be complex, because Tavares is one of the most original voices of contemporary literature.
