Translation as a Form of an Anagram A Discussion with Małgorzata Łukasiewicz and Natalia Kruszyna

An anagram is a rearrangement of the letters or syllables of another word or sentence, making use of all its letters or phrases. The painter, sculptor and graphic artist Hans Bellmer extended this definition to include the visual anagram, in which the body is the subject matter – the rearrangement and replacement of its elements allows its meaning to be rediscovered. The artist compared his creative work with anagrammatic puppet forms to translating a text from a foreign language. Unica Zürn, a German writer and drawer, who was in a relationship with Bellmer, took up his idea of the anagram. Between 1954 and 1964, she wrote 126 unique poetic forms, in which she attempted to convey hidden meanings and new content that was elusive in the original message. In doing so, she became a kind of a translator, thanks to whom “what is incomprehensible becomes clear and what cannot be expressed in words is translated into words”. From the beginning, Unica Zürn’s anagrams were accompanied by drawings, created in parallel with, but not illustrating them. In the series produced between 1956 and 1959, entitled Oracles et Spectacles, the texts incorporated into the drawings became an integral part of the latter.
