Unica Zürn, a German writer and drawer regarded as a representative of Surrealism, was born in Berlin in 1916 and died by her own hand in Paris in 1970. In 1953, she became involved with the painter, sculptor and graphic artist Hans Bellmer, who introduced her to French Surrealist circles. It was from Bellmer that Unica borrowed the idea of the anagram, which she used in wordplays and to rearrange letters, syllables and words, with which she attempted to convey hidden meanings, repressed emotions, and new content that was elusive in the original message. All her life, Zürn had searched in vain for a partner, someone with whom she could forge the relationship of her dreams. She failed to fulfil the traditional female roles of wife, mother and muse, and she did not value what was commonly considered a male domain: her artistic work. Everything she jotted down, although it related to her personal experiences, is also a harrowing testimony to the helplessness and powerlessness of a woman who first tried to conform to the prevailing rules of patriarchy and then to reject them.
