We live in the age of empathy and extreme individualism – the time of social media, crisis of traditional press and conventional outlets. Literary criticism seems out of place and no one knows how to do it these days, since criticism of the book’s content is commonly conflated with the criticism of the author as a person. This is compounded by the extreme politicisation of the mainstream media – not just the state-funded ones – and pervasive social circles. Literary criticism is fraught with increasing risks, and ensuring its independence is growing harder by the day.
