Judith Schalansky documents losses. Anything that we consign to oblivion, all the things we accidentally lose or intentionally throw away, has an absolute value, which stems from the very fact of the object's existence. She refers in a similar manner to inaccessible places, such as remote isles. There are times where we dream of our personal paradise, where we could live life to the fullest; however, these remote isles usually turn out to be unfriendly and useless, and when someone manages to find them, all they find is desert or rocks – sometimes both at the same time. What makes them so enticing? Perhaps we all have such an isle within ourselves? And perhaps these inaccessible places have some truth about the essence of our existence?
