Laura Freudenthaler talks about the emotions that make us strangers to ourselves. Everything we have thought about ourselves, others and the world gets challenged, although at first glance nothing seems to have changed – we are still in the same place, meeting the same people, doing similar things. And yet, in this state of crisis, which we call such only to reassert the false belief that a different way of feeling is the norm, we find it impossible to draw a line between fiction and truth, between delusion and reality. Literature, which tries to bring us closer to such an experience, must delve deep into the very sources of language, where meanings are being formed, and speaking or telling stories is sometimes indistinguishable from silence.
