Some say that we should read a lot, that only literature can offer solace and refuge, and that it is a cure-all. Others argue that this is a purely consumerist stance, subjecting literature to the principles of capitalist exchange, thus weakening us intellectually and spiritually, in spite of promising the exact opposite. Some advocate a more radical change in the canons, claiming that certain books that contain offensive and exclusionary content should be banned or, if publishers still want to publish them, their content should be modified. How should we read books today? What is reading? How do our attitudes towards literature – the contemporary works and the books of the pass, as well as our ideas and concepts about the act of reading affect the state of public debate?
