As part of the “Conrad after hours” series announcing the 15th edition of the Conrad Festival (October 23–29), we invite you to a conversation with Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak, author of the book Chłopki. Opowieść o naszych babkach (Marginesy). The talk will be hosted by Piotr Kieżun.
Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak
Journalist, graduate in Polish Studies at the University of Wrocław. Author of the biography Słonimski. Heretyk na ambonie nominated to the Historical Book of the Year (the K. Moczarski and O. Halecki competitions), the acclaimed biography of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna Iłła (Marginesy, 2017) nominated to the Józef Łukaszewicz Award, and the bestselling book Służące do wszystkiego (Marginesy, 2018), which was listed as one of the ten most important books of 2018 by the bi-monthly magazine Książki. Magazyn do Czytania and was nominated for the “Polityka” History Award and the “Newsweek” T. Torańska award. Her most recent book is titled Chłopki. Opowieść o naszych babkach (Marginesy, 2023).
Piotr Kieżun
Editor, publicist, graphic designer. He explores the relationship between literature and politics in the 19th and 20th centuries and writes about French literature and culture. Editor of the weekly Kultura Liberalna (kulturiberalna.pl), where he heads the book reviews section and contributes to the column on young Polish prose “Debuts and after-debuts”. He designs posters and covers, including for Kultura Liberalna and Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy publishing house. He is also involved in web design. In his spare moments from reading, he swims.
The event is organised by: KBF - cultural institution of the City of Kraków, operator of the Krakow - UNESCO City of Literature programme, Tygodnik Powszechny Foundation, MARGINESY publishing house.
