The world is hardly a natural place to live. It is merely a cultural construct, our collective creation, the various elements of which enter into various relationships with each other in order to influence themselves and – most importantly – impact us, our ways of thinking and the way we act. Linn Strømsborg describes the impact of this social machinery on human desires and needs, focusing on the concept of counter-impact – the moment when an individual is able to cast away the unwanted form of life and choose their own path. What part does literature play in this process? How can one make an individual's story defy the dominant narratives of duties, prohibitions and laws in a given society? And why does this fight never really end?
