Café Samt und Seide (velvet and silk), which was created for the Berlin exhibition Die Mode der Dame (Women’s Fashion), was the first project that German designer Lilly Reich realised together with Mies van der Rohe. An area of approximately 300 m2 was divided by velvet and silk curtains of various lengths hung on metal tubes, creating a magnificent abstract spatial installation. The designer’s use of materials of different textures, thicknesses and colours, the shades of which varied according to the size and density of the folds into which the fabric was arranged, produced an effect that cannot be seen in the surviving black and white photographs. The textile walls of the café created intimate nooks or, pulled apart, revealed the entire space. This procedure was repeated many times by Lilly Reich in her interior designs, and the fabric covering the walls, windows or dividing the space became one of her trademarks.
Lilly Reich was one of the first women to work professionally in design and interior architecture, a collaborator and partner of Mies van der Rohe, as well as co-author of many projects that made the architect’s name famous. Her legacy, on the other hand, was veiled for many years by a thick curtain, which is slowly beginning to be pulled away.
